After an 18-year absence from the Mac world, AutoCAD is back. AutoCAD 2011, for those who are unfamiliar with it, is computer-aided design software that is used by millions of engineers and architects around the world. Autodesk estimates that there are about 10 million AutoCAD users worldwide, and many of their customers have been asking for a Mac version for quite some time. They are now about to get their wish.

AutoCAD for Mac will be more than just a port of the PC version; its designers are working hard to make sure the look and feel is MAC-worthy, while still maintaining the unique features and keyboard shortcuts longtime users will expect.

Even more exciting is the new AutoCAD WS mobile application for iPad and iPhone. With this app users will be able to view and work with AutoCADs DWG files directly on their mobile devices. Imagine carrying hundreds of blueprints with you at all times- on your iPhone or iPad. Well, with AutoCAD WS you can do just that. The mobile app will allow you to use familiar multi-touch gestures to view, edit and share your design ideas in new and exciting ways.

Germany Loses iPhone Exclusivity

Whenever there’s a story to be told about the iPhone losing carrier exclusivity, it’s a nice reminder that such scenarios are indeed possible. As reported today by the Wall Street Journal, iPhone exclusivity in Gemany is about to end. And O2 and Vodafone are poised and ready to swoop in and carry the iPhone just in time for the holiday shopping season to commence.

Deutsche Telekom AG will lose exclusivity for Apple Inc.’s iPhone in Germany ahead of the holiday shopping season, bringing the number of providers that sell the device in the country to three, people familiar with the matter said.

The Wall Street Journal noted that Deutsche Telekom had sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.9 million iPhones in Germany as of June 30. Until now, Germany was hailed as the last major European country to support iPhone carrier exclusivity. With carrier growth now coming to and end on the German homestead, it will be interesting to watch just how lucrative and beneficial this arrangement will prove for Apple and its customers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Deutsche Telekom, at present, has 37 million mobile customers in Germany. Vodafone has 34.9 million mobile customers, while O2 has 16.3 million customers in Germany. The opportunity for growth in the German iPhone market is substantial.

And while everyone will jump to conclusions about the inevitability of carrier expansion in the US, all that can be safely concluded for the time being is that the iPhone user base in Germany is about to get a whole lot bigger.

iOS Now 3rd Most Popular Internet Platform

iOS is the third most-used operating system on the internet, according to a NetApplications report published today. The "Global Market Share Statistics" study showed that browsers powered by iOS made up 1.13 percent of the total last month, edging all flavors of Linux – the former number three – which accounted for only 0.85 percent and blowing away Android-based browsers which had just a 0.2 percent share.

Vince Vizzaccaro, vice president of Net Applications, said that "it’s something to take note of when a mobile operating system passes something that’s been around forever," referring to Linux which came out almost 20 years ago. "Mobile is becoming quite a phenomenon on the Internet," Vizzaccaro observed, noting the 2.6 percent of all internet traffic accounted for by mobile devices. "That’s massive when you think about it," he said.

The big dog is still Windows, with all versions accounting for 91.34 percent. The second-place holder, Mac OS X, declined somewhat to an even 5.00 percent, less than any variant of Windows, with Windows 7 at 15.87 percent, Vista at 14 percent and the venerable XP still holding strong at 60.89 percent.

The number of iOS devices out there has been growing rapidly, with Steve Jobs claiming at Wednesday’s event that the company is "activating 230,000 iOS devices a day." Clearly referring to Google’s claims of 200,000 activations per day, Jobs said that "we think some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers." A Google spokesman objected to this, telling Fortune that "the Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services."
